The world of work is evolving rapidly, and with it, the way companies manage their people. In Africa, a new generation of HRTech startups is redefining what it means to support, empower, and retain employees, from payroll automation to financial wellness, workforce analytics, and HR systems built for deskless or blue-collar workers. This curated watchlist explores some of the most innovative HR technology solutions making waves across the continent

Jem HR

Founded in 2019 as SmartWage and rebranded to Jem HR in 2022, this South African startup has positioned itself as a trailblazer in employee benefits and HR management for deskless workers.

Jem HR focuses on streamlining HR operations for companies, especially those with non-desk-based staff, by providing an intuitive platform that runs on WhatsApp. This approach eliminates barriers to digital access, especially for workers who may not have access to computers or advanced apps.

Beyond simplifying HR tasks, Jem HR is deeply invested in employee financial wellness. Its offerings include salary access solutions and tools to help workers break free from debt cycles, benefitting both employees and employers.

In early 2024, the startup raised $3.3 million in pre-Series A funding, which is being channelled toward expanding product capabilities and scaling operations across the continent.

SeamlessHR

SeamlessHR is one of Africa’s most established payroll and HR technology platforms, offering cloud-based solutions tailored for medium and large enterprises.

Headquartered in Nigeria, the company provides a broad suite of services, including Core HR, recruitment, payroll automation, employee leave management, performance tracking, competency assessments, and advanced analytics.

Its footprint spans across the continent, with operational hubs in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and most recently, Botswana. SeamlessHR currently supports nearly 1,000 enterprises in over 20 countries, showcasing its scalability and relevance in diverse markets.

In 2023, SeamlessHR was recognised with two global awards: Best HR Tech Brand and HR and Payroll Software of the Year, by World Business Outlook and Global Brands Magazine, respectively. These accolades underscore its leadership in delivering innovation and user-centric tools in the African HRTech space.

Workpay

Workpay is a Kenyan-based HR and payroll infrastructure provider helping businesses run compliant and borderless teams across Africa. Its end-to-end platform simplifies workforce management through features like automated payroll, tax compliance, leave and attendance tracking, and employee records management. Workpay’s intuitive dashboard reduces administrative workloads, allowing businesses to focus on growth and employee engagement.

What sets Workpay apart is its commitment to financial inclusion and flexible team structures, helping companies onboard and pay distributed teams with ease. As the future of work grows increasingly remote and decentralised, Workpay’s solutions are well-positioned to support this shift.

The startup continues to gain traction in the African market by building infrastructure that connects how people earn to how they live and spend.

Bluworks

Bluworks, an Egyptian HRTech startup, is reshaping workforce management for blue-collar workers in emerging markets. Its SaaS platform offers a suite of tools designed to reduce turnover, improve hiring practices, and streamline day-to-day HR operations for labour-intensive sectors.

The company recognises that traditional HR solutions often overlook blue-collar workers, despite them making up a large portion of Africa’s workforce. Bluworks is changing that by focusing on timely wage payments, job security, and efficient communication between employers and employees.

Its solutions include digitised recruitment, attendance, payroll, and performance tracking systems; all geared towards businesses that manage large, rotating workforces. By tackling the pain points of an underserved demographic, Bluworks is filling a critical gap in the HRTech landscape.

PaidHR

PaidHR is a digital-first HR infrastructure provider helping organisations manage their employee lifecycle with ease.

The company offers a wide range of features covering payroll automation, tax compliance, compensation planning, and benefit disbursement. One of its standout offerings is an employee wallet app, which allows users to access and spend their wages even before it’s paid into their bank accounts, a significant step toward financial inclusion.

While the fintech elements of its product have sparked conversations about whether PaidHR is pivoting to fintech, the company maintains its identity as an HRTech provider focused on embedding financial services into HR processes. This approach enables employers to offer more flexible, inclusive compensation and benefit structures.

Jobop

Based in Morocco, Jobop is not your typical HR software provider. Instead, it operates as a digital staffing platform focused on connecting temporary workers with employers.

The startup uses data and automation to optimise the hiring process for short-term and contract roles, a vital need in industries like hospitality, logistics, and retail.

Jobop’s mission is to improve employability and job access for millions of workers by streamlining recruitment for companies and ensuring reliable placements for temporary staff. Its contribution to the HRTech space lies in its ability to bridge the gap between underemployed talent and companies needing flexible staffing.

Payspace

Payspace is a pan-African payroll and HR solution provider operating in several countries across Africa and the Middle East. The company delivers a cloud-based platform that automates HR tasks, simplifies payroll processing, and ensures compliance across diverse regulatory environments.

Its key features include employee self-service portals, real-time reporting, automated tax calculations, and HR administration. Payspace has carved out a niche by offering scalable and compliant solutions to both local and multinational businesses.

In 2023, the company was acquired by Deel, a global leader in international payroll and compliance. This acquisition solidifies Payspace’s relevance in the global HRTech ecosystem and brings Deel’s capabilities into emerging markets across Africa.
