Editorial Policy

AU-Startups is an independent editorial platform covering African startups, funding, and technology. This page explains how we work, what you can expect from us, and how to reach us when we get something wrong.

Mission

We cover the African startup ecosystem — who is building, who is funding, and what is changing. Our goal is to be the reliable reference for anyone operating in or paying attention to African tech.

Editorial independence

Our editorial decisions are made by the AU-Startups editorial team. Sponsors, advertisers, and partners have no influence over what we cover, how we cover it, or what conclusions we draw. Sponsored content is always clearly labelled as such and is never written by the editorial team.

Sourcing standards

Every claim of fact in a news article must be attributable to a primary source: company announcements, regulatory filings, investor disclosures, first-party interviews, or data from recognised ecosystem trackers. Funding figures are verified against company or investor statements wherever possible.

Where we rely on reporting by other publications, we credit and link the source. Where a claim cannot be independently verified, we say so in the piece.

Editorial oversight

Every piece that carries the AU-Startups masthead is reviewed under the oversight of the editor-in-chief, Kessiena Majemite. Responsibility for the accuracy and fairness of published work rests with the editorial team collectively.

We use a range of research, drafting, and production tools to gather sources, check facts, and prepare content for publication. No piece is published without human editorial review. Our bylines reflect the editorial desk responsible for a piece, not the specific tools used to produce it.

Conflicts of interest

Writers disclose personal or financial interests that could reasonably be seen as affecting their reporting. Where an AU-Startups staff member holds equity, advises, or has another material relationship with a company being covered, that is disclosed inline.

Corrections

If you spot an error in our reporting, email corrections@au-startups.com. Material corrections are added as a note at the bottom of the affected article. Significant corrections also trigger an update to any newsletter or social distribution that carried the original claim.

Right of reply

Subjects of our reporting who believe they have been inaccurately or unfairly characterised can request a right of reply. We review every request and publish responses or clarifications where warranted.

Contributors

We accept pitches and submitted pieces from external contributors. See pitch submissions for editorial pitches and product announcements. External contributions are edited to the same standards as staff work.
