Week 12: Funding and Grant Opportunities for African Startups

Welcome to Week 12 of our funding and grant opportunities series for African startups! In this edition, we bring you the latest funding news and opportunities from across the continent, including seed funding, accelerator programmes, and grant opportunities.

As always, we hope to help you stay updated on the latest funding opportunities that could help take your startup to the next level. So, let’s dive in and explore what this week has in store for African startups!

African Impact Challenge 2023

The goal of the African Impact Challenge is to build the Africa we want to see, by investing in the continent’s early innovators. They are enabled to build market-creating innovations, which tackle their country’s biggest challenges with technology

The challenge starts with a self-paced Pre-incubation phase beginning in April 2023, which leads to the selection of top-performing ventures for funding and Incubation.

Each top-performing venture will be interviewed and allowed to choose between a non-dilutive grant or a simple agreement of future equity investment.

Benefits: $25,000 in either grant funding or SAFE investment, all-expense paid incubation at the University of Toronto, mentorship, capacity building.

Greenovations – Africa 2023

The Greenovations Africa program combines incubation and post-incubation programs, providing participants with sector-specific skills, entrepreneurial knowledge, and the resources needed to boost their chances of success through the maturation process of their business concept or solution. In turn, we help you turn your concept into a viable and market-ready product ready to showcase its high growth potential.

Benefits: Seed grant funding of €3,300, access to technical expertise in the selected green sectors, dedicated mentorship and access to a network of Entrepreneurship Support Organizations (ESOs), integration into local hubs with state-of-the-Art facilities.

AWS FinTech Africa Accelerator

The AWS FinTech Africa Accelerator is an online and equity-free 10-week program that leverages the best of Amazon’s infrastructure and partner network to support pre-seed and seed stage FinTech startups developing their projects in Africa and beyond in the following categories:

  • Open & Embedded Finance
  • Big Data & AIML
  • Blockchain & Decentralised Finance
  • FinTech-as-a-service
  • Financial inclusion & Sustainability
  • Others

Benefits: Up To $25K in AWS Activate Credits, access to tech resources, guidance and a community of peers, access to credits, valuable discounts & offers from AWS Partners.

She Leads Africa High Growth Coaching Program

The SLA High Growth Coaching Program is a 3-month program that provides growth-focused entrepreneurs with coaching and support to scale their businesses. This year’s program, HGCP 2023, is designed to spotlight social enterprises in the Nigerian ecosystem. If you’re a social entrepreneur, this is a unique opportunity to access the support you need to grow your business and make an impact on the market.

Benefits: Access to expert training and support, personalized business coaching, access to a private community of high-achieving founders.

Standard Chartered Women in Tech Incubator

The Standard Chartered Women in Technology Incubator Kenya is Africa’s leading incubator programme for female founded businesses, aligning with calls for more diversity in technology, entrepreneurship and for more opportunities for women to develop entrepreneurial and leadership excellence. The program is an initiative of Standard Chartered in partnership with @iBizAfrica Centre, Strathmore University.

Benefits: $10,000 in equity-free seed funding, 12 weeks of an immersive learning experience, access to coaching experts, B2B networking opportunities, 9 months ongoing support to assist with go-to market and scaling.
